Can exercising too hard kill you?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/can-exercising-too-hard-kill-you/2016/02/22/4e6927f4-d4c5-11e5-b195-2e29a4e13425_story.html

This is a great article on the possible long-term effects of ‘high-level’ endurance exercise. Especially with weekend warriors doing marathons, Spartan Races and Triathlons.  I, myself, as a triathlete, just recently had an opportunity to talk with a physician, and discuss details on my own heart performance, while using information from a Schiller Holter Monitor.

It’s comforting to know that the deaths of high level athletes are not linked to specific cardiovascular complications, but there is still plenty of room for research.  Doing tests like EKG, Holter Monitoring and Stress Testing can save the lives of those trying to do the right thing by exercising, but not knowing their own bodies limitations.

Overall, it’s a necessity to regularly check your heart if you’re doing longer, strenuous exercise on a regular basis. Know your body, and get the tests performed by your physicians to do that.  Any quality practitioner is using the above mentioned tools to assess your cardiovascular health.

At the end of the day, remember; racing and exercise, even if you’re getting paid, is not all life has to offer. Recognize when something doesn’t feel right.  Don’t forget the time your body needs to do the opposite. To de-stress. To take a deep breath.

Allergy Testing

Most patients/offices overlook Allergy Testing as a clinically applicable test during the cold months, and although those types of allergies are not as prominent as Spring/Fall, they can be just as debilitating.  Here’s a look at what happens when families close their doors and windows, and start circulating air throughout the house for 2-3 months:

Most common Winter Allergies that show up during an Allergy Test:
  • Pet Dander
  • Mold (sometimes hidden in the walls, but still present)
  • Dust Mites
What are the most common Symptoms of Winter Allergies?
  • Coughing
  • Dark Circles under the eyes
  • Itchy eyes and nose
  • Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Watery Eyes

Aren’t There Better Options Other Than NSAIDs For Pain Patients?

The Hidden Risks

As stated in a recent article by Sanjay Gupta (http://www.everydayhealth.com/news/common-pain-pills-raise-heart-attack-stroke-risk/?pos=1&xid=nl_EverydayHealthHeartHealth_20150906), the FDA has re-evaluated the risks and effects of continuous pain-medication usage (NSAIDS – Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs).  As over-the-counter options, NSAIDs are used for anything from headaches to arthritis.  It started as Aspirin, and now includes Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Naproxen.  Back in July of 2015, the FDA issued a statement associating the risk for Heart Attack or Stroke with non-aspirin NSAIDs.  The drugs are impairing the same substances in the body that signal inflammation and pain, that also promote a healthy cardiac system.  This can result in an increased chance of an ‘adverse heart event’.

Better Medicine Equals Less Risk

Instead of leaving patients to play their own doctor and over use over-the-counter drugs, there are clinical options available to better diagnose and treat the source in the office.

Using technology like sensory nerve conduction, that’s painless and quick like the Axon II SPF-NCS, any ‘first-responder’ like a family practice/internal medicine/primary care physician can diagnose nerve pain on site in the office.  This avoids long delays with referring out to specialists, painful and time-consuming EMG tests, and Xray’s and MRI’s.  It’s evolving with the standard of care expected by today’s patient.

In-office, holistic treatment modalities like the Hakomed ProElecDT, which use a patented electro-therapy protocol, can decrease patient dependence on over-the-counter and prescription pain medicine.

The reality is, in this rapidly evolving medical environment, if you are the primary care doctor, survival means diversifying your diagnostic ability, as well as providing solutions.  This limits patients playing their own physician, drug-dependency, and increases the clinical and financial capability of the office.

Recent Article on Obamacare Effectiveness and Its Incorporation

This recent article on Obamacare by Daniel Kessler is a great representation for how both sides of the government are reacting to the coming incorporation of the new laws and regulations that are about to set in.

APA Conference 2013 with Jim

At the 2013 American Pain Society  Annual Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with Dr. James Hedgecock; Inventor of the Axon II Delta NCS system.  Also in the photo is Matt Berens, Director of Sales for Advanced Clinical Products.

At the conference, ACP displayed both the Delta NCS nerve conduction system that pinpoints nerve pathology and the Hakomed ProElecDT 2000 pain treatment system.  Both were huge hits as most of the physicians were sending out most of their testing instead of using the Delta NCS systems’ 20 minute test in their office.  We also showed physicians how to use the Hakomed in their office as a Holistic compliment to injections and other more involved treatments.
